More Than Tamales: Finding Unexpected Joy at Cristo Rey

By the Rev. Bruce Kreutzer

A  small group of folks from Hope Lutheran in Vance drove together to visit Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Lexington for their 5 pm service on February 8.  Why did we go?  We didn’t go to protest ICE but simply to stand together with our brothers and sisters and show our support.  We went to be a blessing and brought some food items for them but little did we know that we were the ones who were blessed.  We were greeted warmly by Pastor Jorge who gave us English translations of the service and his sermon.  Our Council President, David Hamson said: Sitting in their beautiful sanctuary, singing hymns of praise to our Lord, the title of an old hymnal kept coming into my mind “With One Voice.” Seeing and hearing their enthusiasm for worshiping together warmed my heart to tears.  It struck us all how many children and youth were involved.  Thirteen children came up for the Children’s sermon and we saw the joy on their faces.  They took a special offering for a family with a medical condition and collected $600.  After worship we were treated to a wonderful time of tamales and fellowship.  If you are interested in visiting Cristo Rey Lutheran Church, please contact me at pastorbrucekreutzer@gmail.com
