We Pray for the Family of The Reverend Robert Earl McCombs

The Reverand Robert Earl McCombs, Jr., 94, of Greenwood, widower of Martha Barnhardt McCombs, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Born in Kannapolis, NC, he was a son of the late Robert E. McCombs, Sr. and Kathrine Smith McCombs. Earl was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC, where he received an AB degree; Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, where he earned a Masters of Divinity degree; and also a Clinical Pastors Education degree from South Carolina State Hospital. He served as pastor of St. Andrews Lutheran Church of Concord, NC, Faith Lutheran Church of Faith, NC, Lutheran Church of Epiphany in Winston Salem, NC, St. David Lutheran Church of West Columbia, SC and Immanuel Lutheran Church of Greenwood. He retired after working seven years as chaplain of HospiceCare of the Piedmont. Earl was a charter member of two Rotary Clubs and served as president for both, Lexington SC Rotary and Emerald City Rotary of Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Arlen Dale McCombs and two sisters, Betty Jean Mauldin and Jackie McCombs Reynolds.

Surviving are his children, Katherine Ruth Lingle, Robert E. McCombs, III (Laura), and Mary Ann Cooper (John); grandchildren, Lee Lingle, Ben Lingle (Laura), Anna Lingle Sanford (Tommy), Jack Cooper, Katie Cooper, Robert McCombs, Molly McCombs, and Riley Raybon Steele (Josh); and six great grandchildren.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful caregivers and staff of NHC Greenwood; Caris Hospice; and Rev. Johnnie Waller.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on March 23, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Chris Christopher and Rev. Greg Brown officiating. Inurnment will follow immediately after the service at the church columbarium.

The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the church.
