Reverend Dermont Luther Swicegood, 89, born October 22, 1936 in Enochville, NC passed on September 9, 2026 in White Rock, SC.
He attended Brooklyn Cayce H.S. achieving academically and excelling in football, track and golf. He graduated Newberry College, 1957 as the leading player on the golf team. Completing his Masters Degree at The Lutheran Theological Seminary, Columbia, SC – he remains the youngest ordained Lutheran Minister asked by the S.C. Synod at age 23 to start a mission church in Columbia that became Christ the King Lutheran Church, breaking ground in 1963 after building his congregation and conducting services in local schools. He went on to serve at Saint Michaels in Greenville, SC 1974 – 1987. The desire for additional challenge took him to King of Glory, North Myrtle Beach, SC 1987 – 1995. He returned to Columbia in 1995 and went on to serve as an interim pastor in Tega Cay, SC. In addition to serving above the highest level of every capacity to his community and congregations, He lead by example in Humanitarian efforts traveling to Tanzania, Africa assisting in the reorganization and reconstruction of two churches in 1991.
He lead multiple volunteer organizations into McClellanville and Metro Myrtle Beach, SC for reconstruction after Hurricane Hugo. He spent time traveling with a mission group throughout SC, staying in the same housing with Migrant Workers administering aid and worship.
His passion for life and living to the fullest were equal to his sincere desire to make life and living for and with others a priority.
He had an unparalleled love for the outdoors, a certified scuba diver, an accomplished sailor, a 3 handicap Golf fanatic, winning multiple First Flight Golf Tournaments. He was sought to be on the team of every foursome he ever played with throughout thousands of rounds he shared with a veracity of friends.
An avid camper and hiker, he championed the development of youth, scouting, equality and respect, showing others how to make their situation as well as the world a better place.
A loving, genuine caring man, Father, Grand and Great Grand Father, Husband, Brother and Family Man. He was a kindred spirit that was apparent to any and everyone he met. He will be dearly missed and celebrated eternally by his family and the countless people whose lives he touched. Thank you for being the man you were.
He is survived by, David Swicegood, Gaynell Hubbs, Dermont L. Swicegood Jr., Zack and Trez Swicegood, Cameron and Reid Swicegood, Jeremy Martin, Jaxon and Tucker Martin.
Visitation will be at 2:00PM followed by a Memorial service at 3:00PM Sunday, September 13, 2026 at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 B Avenue, West Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Tabor Lutheran Church or Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
