We Pray for the Family of The Rev. Dr. Larry S. Long

The Reverend Dr. Larry S. Long , beloved husband to Bonnie Roof Long passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 24, 2022. He was born May 20, 1940, in Lexington, SC to the late Harold E. Long and Pauline McLendon Long.

Surviving are his wife of almost 60 years, Bonnie Roof Long, son Keith and his wife Sarah of Greenville, SC; daughter Kelly Long Smith and her husband Garen of Alpharetta, GA and their children Logan and Mac. Pastor Long is also survived by a brother William Long (Ingrid), and a sister, Susan Long Rawl (Pastor Leon Rawl) of Lexington.

A graduate of Lexington High School, he attended Newberry College where he was president of the student body, member of the Kappa Phi fraternity and Blue Key Society.

Further education includes Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity. He later received his Doctorate of Ministry from Drew University’s school of theology.

He was ordained in 1965 and began his ministry as associate pastor at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC. He then served as senior pastor at the following churches: Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Lexington; Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, N. Augusta; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC.

He served as director of Church Relations/ Major Gifts for Lutheran Family Services for the Carolinas. Other ministries and boards he was involved with include: Executive board of SC Synod Council, Board of Trustees of Lutheran Homes and Lutheran Homes Foundation and director of Church Relations for Newberry College.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 27, at 3:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
Visitation following the service will be held in the social hall.
