2021, the synods of Region 9 ELCA developed Racial Justice Boundaries Education for all rostered ministers in the six synods of Region 9 and in Metro DC Synod. Annual Boundaries Education is required of all rostered ministers and candidates for ministry in Region 9, per the Region 9 Bishops’ Relational Agreement. Regions 8 and 9 are partnering to hold the next boundaries education virtually on Zoom. The regions are providing this continuing education at no cost to attendees.

Boundaries and Inclusion Education: Racial Justice aims to engage, equip, and empower participants in their reflection, conversation, and awareness education around racial justice and injustices related to systemic racism and white supremacy.
Each Boundaries and Inclusion Education: Racial Justice Session will include:

- Impact of Bias: How our Lens Impacts our Ministry
- Danger of a Single Story: Deconstructing Assumptions
- Fish bowl: Sharing Lived Experiences
- Sending Worship

Dear Rostered Leaders
It seems there is much confusion around Boundary Training and the recent invitation to RACIAL JUSTICE BOUNDARIES AND INCLUSION EDUCATION – 2021
First, I recommend that you read the attached document, Bishop’s Relational Agreement. This document will outline for you the expectations and requirements of all Rostered Ministers in Region 9.
From the Bishop’s Relational Agreement, ALL Rostered persons, who are currently in a Call, seeking Call, serving as pulpit supply, or serving in interim ministry are to participate in Boundary and Inclusion Education. There are three components:
- Basic
- Racial Justice
- Gender Inclusion
These three areas will be offered and are to follow a three-year rotation. This year for SC Synod, Rostered Ministers, who are identified in the previous paragraph, are required to complete Basic Boundary training in 2021. If you have not registered for this training, the next training date is September 21, 2021, click here to register. NOTE — this is the last offering for Basic Boundaries Training for 2021.
In addition, Region 9 is offering the second component, Racial Justice Boundaries and Inclusion Education – 2021. It is available for any Rostered Minister to complete this year if you desire to complete now. This course offering will be available each year with limited offerings. In 2022, Gender Inclusion Education will be added.
What is important for us as Rostered Ministers? We must have each component completed every three years. The SC Synod will keep a record of all Rostered Ministers and their participation in these trainings. When completing the training, always ask for a certificate of completion and submit to the Synod Office.
Example of Rotation:
- Year 2021 — Basic Boundary Training
- Year 2022 — Gender Inclusion
- Year 2023 — Racial Justice
- Repeat the Rotation
I hope this clears up any confusion. Again, I urge all of our leaders to read the Bishop’s Relational Agreement, which is attached for your convenience.
