On the opening night of the South Carolina Synod Assembly, many attendees took part in “Beer and Hymns” on the first floor of the Marriott hotel at Main and Hampton streets. The event began at 7:00 pm, and by 7:30 more than 60 people had gathered to sing, visit with friends and colleagues, and enjoy the scrumptious desserts. By 8:00 pm, the group had grown to over a hundred people.

The Marriott provided a colorful fruit tray, cupcakes of various flavors, including chocolate and red velvet. There were brownie and blondie bars, petit fours, and macaroons provided for the event.
Music was provided by Jason Shaffer on the bass ukelele, Adam Carnell playing the drum, Kris Litman-Koon and Christopher Girardeau on guitar, and Jackie Utley on the tambourine; Kathleen Cartledge assisted on vocals. The songs included old favorites such as “What A Fellowship,” and less traditional songs such as Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
