BY THE REV. ALEJANDRO MEJIA
“WE MADE IT!” the words proudly said by members from Nuestro Salvador -the first Hispanic Lutheran mission congregation in the Upstate of South Carolina- after being present all day at the Upstate Pride March and Festival on Saturday Nov. 2 in Spartanburg, SC.
Nuestro Salvador was one and the only Hispanic and Lutheran congregation among the almost one-hundred exhibitors, and more than two-thousand participants that gathered at Barnet Park in Spartanburg SC. There were fifteen volunteers from our mission congregation that came to stand in support and solidarity with our siblings from the LGBTQ+ community. Pastor Alejandro was invited as the guest preacher at the Upstate Pride Opening Interfaith Service.
This was a big milestone for our mission congregation which is mostly formed by Latino immigrants, who despite the many challenges and stumbling blocks this community faces day by day, saw this opportunity as an occasion to put their faith into action and be witnesses of the good news that welcomes all.
Nuestro Salvador is definitely making a difference in the Upstate of South Carolina, focusing in building relationships that promotes inclusion, love, and service to all. We thank God for using us as her instruments for the sake of her people.
