The 2025 South Carolina Synod Assembly recently bestowed the honorary title of Bishop Emeritus upon the Reverend Dr. Herman R. Yoos, III, recognizing his faithful and sacrificial service as Bishop from 2008 to 2020. Bishop Ginny Aebischer, deeply honored by the opportunity, made this presentation on behalf of the Synod Council during the assembly, highlighting Bishop Yoos’s tenure as being “marked by honor, integrity, distinction through his servant ministry of oversight and exemplary leadership as the chief pastor and teacher of this Synod.”
The title of Bishop Emeritus, while not formally recognized in the ELCA’s roster manual, is a distinguished honor many synods choose to grant to retired or outgoing bishops through action of the Synod Council. Previous recipients in the South Carolina Synod include the Reverend Dr. James S. Aull (Bishop from 1988-1996, honored in 2001) and the Reverend Dr. David A. Donges (Bishop from 1996-2008, honored in 2011). Bishop Donges was present at this historic 200th-anniversary assembly. Bishop Yoos’s enduring respect, trust, and affection from congregations and ordained ministers alike were underscored as the assembly approved the resolution with a rising vote of thanks and applause, affirming their profound love and appreciation for his ministry.
