Resolution: Communal Stewards of God’s Creation

By The Rev. Amanda Burke

A resolution, Communal Stewards of God’s Creation, was brought before the assembly by The Rev. Michele Fischer and The Rev. Kris Litman-Koon. The proposed resolution references two verses from Psalms.

“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it” -Psalm 24:1

“O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures” -Psalm 104:24

In conjunction with humankind being created in God’s image and tasked with caring for creation, this resolution points to an intentional effort to preserve nature, care for the habitats of all creatures, and curb humankind’s impact on the earth. The authors asked the South Carolina Synod to set a goal for each congregation of the synod to participate in at least one strategy to address our collective stewardship of God’s creation.

The Rev. Michele Fischer spoke in favor of the resolution. She shared a story of her previous congregation creating a butterfly garden, creating a habitat for caterpillars and butterflies. These efforts created a sense of community and brought joy to those involved. Rev. Fischer extended an invitation to congregations to be partners in this effort.

A vote was held with the results being 234 in favor and 11 opposed. The resolution passed with a 95.51% affirmation. Each congregation is encouraged to take pictures of their efforts and share them with the synod office to be used as a follow-up in the 2025 Synod Assembly.
