FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbia, SC (July 15, 2020) — Listen, God is Calling! That is the theme of the ELCA South Carolina Synod Assembly. It is based on Matthew 7:7. “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” The assembly will be held July 25, 2020 online using Zoom meetings and a meeting platform from Lumi Global which provides a secure way to vote on the important items on this agenda.
This unprecedented opportunity to gather electronically comes at a critical time for the synod. The Rev. Dr. Herman Yoos, Bishop of the South Carolina Synod is retiring and the synod will be electing a new bishop. Synodical Bishops in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America serve six-year terms.
In addition to the election of a Bishop, attendees will have opportunities to: hear from our ELCA Churchwide representative, Victoria Flood who will lead the election process for the office of Bishop; participate in synod business decisions including additional elections for the Synod Council; recognizing the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women on Lutheran rosters; and worship together online.
This synod will be the first in the denomination to use these tools as an online method for its annual meeting.
