On September 10, 2023, St. Luke Lutheran Church in Columbia, South Carolina celebrated God’s Work Our Hands Sunday. This was a special year as it marked the 10-year anniversary of the program. At St. Luke’s, we are actively supporting the Olympia community with a monthly food bag distribution. We have two different types of food bags available for those less fortunate. We have regular food bags and then we have cookless food bags for those who do not have access to a stove or microwave. The Food Bag Ministry has also involved the Youth at St. Luke’s as they planted a garden this summer and have used the fresh vegetables in the donation bags.
In addition to the monthly food bags, we also send blessing bags to our homebound church members five to six times a year. This ministry developed out of the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued as not everyone is able to join us for worship on Sunday mornings.
As a congregation, we sang Wayne Wold’s hymn “God’s Work Our Hands” to the tune of Earth and All Stars.
The culminating activity for God’s Work Our Hands Sunday was a sub sandwich meal prepared by our Worship and Music Committee. During the meal, we discussed our blessings and how we can continue to be a presence in the Olympia Community.
