Hospitality and Transformation with God’s Creation

By Deacon Dallas Shealy, Executive Director of The South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers

“To facilitate the growth of God’s kingdom through exceptional hospitality and transformational opportunities within the glory of God’s creation.”

This is, and has been, the mission of the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers at Camp Kinard and Coastal Retreat. It’s truly a lofty mission and our board of trustees and staff have wrestled for the past few years with how we are called to live into this vocation. With such incredible resources to offer at these special places, we want to ensure they are playing a vital role in helping individuals grow in faith within the SC Synod and beyond. And we believe the Holy Spirit is doing just that here at Camp Kinard and Coastal Retreat!

The Holy Spirit continues to work through our staff, board, and the many generous individuals who support this ministry of hospitality. Early this year, SCLRC was blessed to receive a very generous gift in the form of a stock transfer from Annie Ruth Addy of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church (West Columbia, SC). Through her gift, this ministry joyfully celebrated the completion of Phase II of the Building+Renewing+Believing Capital Campaign. Because of her generosity, work has already begun to finish several key projects remaining at Camp Kinard and Coastal Retreat.

Knowing this chapter was complete and continuing to look forward, our staff and board put together a “Vision Committee” to help lead this ministry into the future. Through this committee, SCLRC has begun to discuss and plan for future expansion at Camp Kinard by adding additional sleeping, meeting, worship, and dining space.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, the foundation for this next chapter in SCLRC’s history will be complete within the next 12-18 months as we plan for Phase III of the Building+Renewing+Believing Capital Campaign.

What Camp Kinard hopes to construct in the near future is a 60 bed building with meeting, dining, and worship space for at least 200 people – all with spectacular views of the beautiful lake!

God has much in store for the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers and we invite you to be part of these future plans!
