The Life and Work of the ELCA: A presentation by The Rev. Dr. Wyvetta Bullock
By Pastor Michele Fischer
The theme of her message was “Thank you.” Before showing the video, available on YouTube, Pastor Bullock thanked those from South Carolina who serve on church wide committees.
She thanked us for our weekly offering, which is passed on to the synod, and from the synod to the offices in Chicago. From there, our gifts are then spread across the nation and the world in hunger relief, disaster aid, seminary scholarships, congregational vitality programs, and more.
The South Carolina Synod has always been a strong supporter of the Young Adults in Global Ministry (YAGM) program, as well.
Some of the nearly $1,000,000 in benevolence sent to Churchwide has been used to directly feed over 200 people a week at community meals which are offered at Shepherd of the Sea in Murrells Inlet.
We are stronger together as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America than we could ever be as a single congregation or synod. Speaking of Churchwide, this summer at the Churchwide Assembly, members of that assembly will vote on a social statement called “Faith, Sexism, and Justice.” Assembly members will also be voting on a document apologizing for our role as a church in slavery and the legacy of racism.
Rev. Bullock ended her address to us as she began it, saying “Thank you.”
This is Christ’s Church. There is a place for you here.
We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Liberated by our faith, we embrace you as a whole person–questions, complexities and all. Join us as we do God’s work in Christ’s name for the life of the world.
