The Danger of a Single Story

By Pastor Michele Fischer

Deacon Andrew More brought the assembly a reflection on the story of the Good Samaritan on Friday morning.

The parable of the Good Samaritan is another place where Jesus challenges the “one story,” the two dimensional, dehumanizing tendency we as humans have to box people into one category. People in power often create a two dimensional characterization of “the other.” Yet time and time again, Jesus challenges the people around him to see beyond the single story. We see this in the story of the woman caught in the act of adultery, the Samaritan woman at the well, and with gentiles and people suffering with various illnesses.
Deacon More challenged us to see beyond our own single story narratives we carry with us and be willing to ask the question “Do we know this person’s story?”

Are we willing to be like Jesus and bust the “single story narratives” we hear every day?
