Friday Evening Prayer
By Rev. Lisa Isenhower
As a creative part of this communion service, worshipers were invited to unburden themselves prior to receiving the sacrament by symbolically placing their burdens and concerns in God’s hands.
Before the service, worshipers received small squares of paper on which they could write whatever burdens were on their hearts. Later, as ushers invited people to communion, they directed worshipers toward the font at the center of the worship space so that they could remember their baptism by dipping a finger in the water and tracing a cross on their foreheads. As worshipers moved from font to table, they passed by one of the crosses on either side of the worship space. In front of each cross was a clay pot in which worshipers could place the papers on which they had written their burdens. Having been reminded of who and whose they are—baptized children of God—and having laid their burdens at the foot of the cross, God’s people could come with joy to the Lord’s table.
Worship leaders were Pastor Alejandro Mejia (Officiant), Pastor Wyvetta Bullock (Presider), Assembly Chaplain Pastor Chris Fischer (Assisting Minister), Pastor Jim Parham (Musician and Worship Leader), and Pastors Christine C. R. Parham and Andrea Rice (Cantors/Song Leaders). This evening’s offering was also designated to the building fund for Christo Rey’s new worship and outreach center.
