Via de Cristo Weekend Story

By Beth Fulmer

Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother. Mark 3:35

On June 10, 2018, in celebration of Via de Cristo, colors, colors, and more colors filled Messiah Lutheran Church. Serving God in every capacity were Cursillistas (the people who had at one time attended a Via de Cristo weekend). Messiah has 50 Cursillistas and is one of the most active Via de Cristo church in South Carolina. Twenty-six were involved in the June 10th service.

It was easy to spot someone who had experienced a Via de Cristo weekend; not only was he or she dressed colorfully and wore a cross around the neck; it was the unbridled enthusiasm displayed for this wonderful worship opportunity that really could not go unnoticed.

Gretchen Neff delivered a to-the-point sermon. “Who is my mother?” Jesus asked. With that start, she went on to explain that He was not asking a literal question; His point was that everyone was a part of His family, a sentiment that still holds true in today’s world.

We are brothers and sisters in Christ. A Via de Cristo weekend builds on this feeling of belonging and it is impossible to leave that weekend without new bonds that will never be broken and a new feeling for your brothers and sisters at Messiah and beyond. It is definitely a faith building experience and an experience of the love of Jesus Christ.
