Stewardship at Crossroads

By The Rev. Josh Tucker

Four Ways to Revitalize Disciples and Stewards in Your Congregation was the theme for the January 26, 2019 stewardship workshop hosted by Crossroads in Indian Land. The workshop, which focused on different approaches to biblical stewardship and ways to grow stewardship in congregations, was led by ELCA Director for Stewardship, Mr. Keith Mundy. Stewardship teams, finance teams and congregational treasurers from six area congregations spent time in prayer, bible study and discussion around four stewardship emphases: an asset approach to ministry, a missional approach to budgeting, telling your ministry story as a tool for stewardship, and practical ways to grow giving.

One of the highlights of the workshop was an exercise to help participants to think about the assets they have on a personal and congregational level. Mr. Mundy led the groups during this exercise to use the assets we have to approach common problems that are perceived in churches today, discovering how we can re-frame our thinking, moving away from scarcity mentality toward an asset-based approach to ministry. Crossroads member Wendy Davidson shared her thoughts on the workshop: “The study and discussion on sharing your church’s ministry story to grow stewardship affirmed for me the need for congregations to that more effectively. People are asked to support so many different types of organizations and institutions, but if those who are a part of your church family know how their gifts of time, talent are treasures make a difference in the lives of others and for the kingdom of God, they will be inspired to give.”

One important takeaway Mr. Mundy offered the group was the ministry of the Ecumenical Stewardship Center and their gift of congregational resources through the Generosity 365 project. Participation in Generosity 365 gives congregations access to so many helpful stewardship tools and resources that can help your church thrive as generous disciples of Christ.
