“Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:13-14)
On Thursday, September 21, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church hosted a Service of Prayer for Healing for all members of the Batesburg-Leesville community that desired prayer for healing of any kind-of body, mind, spirit, or relationship. Around 50 people gathered in the sanctuary at Faith to pray, hear scripture, and sing together. Worshipers were invited forward to receive a blessing and anointing with oil for healing.
The service was prompted by one member’s desire to pray for the healing of several friends who were struggling with cancer. The member, Debbie Taylor, approached her pastor to see if the congregation could hold a service of prayer for healing. Pastor Lisa Isenhower, having participated in a service of prayer for healing at her internship congregation a number of years ago, was supportive of the idea. “All of us need God’s healing touch,” she said. “It was a blessing to gather so many members of the community in prayer for one another.”
The offering that was gathered on that evening was given to Lutheran Disaster Response for hurricane relief. The congregation hopes to make the Service of Prayer for Healing a regular event, open to all members of the community.
In this article you’ve heard from one of our Synod Communicators. Synod Communicators are volunteers, approved by their congregation’s council, to help bring the stories of how our offerings, gifts, and effective congregational ministries are reaching “outside the walls” across the synod. They will share your congregation’s stories of work “outside the walls” by submitting them for sharing through the South Carolina Synod’s publications. To find out more about the Synod Communicator program contact The Rev. Ozzie Herlong (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Neal Fischer (email@example.com).
