Sanctuary Renewal Project at St. Stephen’s

St. Stephen’s, Lexington

Most of us usually give up something for Lent. St. Stephen’s Lexington took this to another level this year. We gave up our Sanctuary for Lent!!

Early last year St. Stephen’s Church Council came up with the idea of a bucket list of projects that needed to be done to our facility. Most of the initial items on the bucket list were in our 62-year-old sanctuary. The Sanctuary has had no major work done in the last 30 years except for the sound system, which was upgraded in 2017.

Replacing the protective plexiglass with a clear safety glass over the stained-glass windows topped the project and has been completed. Painting, new carpet and vinyl flooring in Sanctuary, replacing tile in the balcony, replacing the lights with LED lighting, renovating a transept to better accommodate our music ministry, and new pew cushions are some of the major changes that are in progress.

Council went to the congregation requesting funds for the project in November. By the end of February, we collected over $109,000.00 which pays the entire cost of the project.

To complete this project meant that our sanctuary would not be available for worship for approximately 6 weeks. We held our final service in the Sanctuary on Ash Wednesday. We held worship services in the gym of our Family Life center. We even had an altar special made for this purpose.

We rededicated our Sanctuary on Palm Sunday.

Some of the labor was provided by volunteers from the congregation with carpentry skills and others just willing to lend a hand where needed. Volunteers spent most of the weekend of April 06 and 07 was spent repositioning and securing the pews, wiping down and polishing the wooden surfaces, and replacing the Bibles and hymnbooks back in the pews.

Come worship with us at 119 North Church Street in Lexington. Our worship services are 8:30 and 11:00am with Sunday school at 9:45. Wednesday Lent Services are at 12:30 and 6:00pm in the social hall.
