novusway-confirmation-gift-1Faith Alive! is a confirmation retreat program at Lutheridge in the nonsummer months, but in the case of Karen Gilbertson, “Faith Alive!” took a more literal role in her life. Yes, she attended Faith Alive retreats; not one, not two, but EIGHT retreats! Lutheridge and Faith Alive retreats served as Karen’s confirmation curriculum, as she was the one and only confirmation-age youth in her congregation, Telico Village, Tennessee. When asked about her time taking part in Faith Alive, Karen responded, “It was a lot of fun and the food was always the best!” Beyond that, she said that she met some counselors who really wanted to get to know her on a personal level, which helped her feel included and excited to go back for Faith Alive each time!

Because Karen attended eight Faith Alive retreats, she was able to study each topic she would have covered in confirmation class at home: Lord’s Prayer, Apostles Creed, Old Testament, New Testament, Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, 10 Commandments, and Reformation! Every time Karen returned to Lutheridge for another confirmation class, her faith was rejuvenated through a new lesson, and she was another step closer to being confirmed in her congregation back home! Karen started this whole process in the eighth grade, attending two retreats, four in ninth grade, and two in tenth grade. She was confirmed on March 6, 2016, following her final Faith Alive Retreat!

Learning and growing each day as Lutheran Christians is what we are called to do each day, and Lutheridge is humbled and thankful to have been such a huge part of Karen’s faith development. What a privilege it is to meet and learn with wonderful campers just like Karen, and to witness their faith come alive!
