50th South Carolina Lutheran Scout Retreat a Success

By Wilbur Smith

Lutheran Scout Retreat

Approximately 350 scouts and adults attended the 50th annual retreat at Camp Kinard on January 18 – 20, 2019. The retreat provides an opportunity for troops to enjoy a winter campout, participating in individual skill and teamwork events, and a weekend of Christian fellowship and fun with other Scouts. There were 10 events, including “THE WHEEL”, an old standby, “TIN CAN COOKING”, “THREAD THE NEEDLE”, and “50 YEARS OF SCOUTING TRIVIA”.

A special 50 year patch was designed to emphasize a scout’s duty. Duty to God, Duty to Others and Duty to Self.

Saturday night Campfire included a supper of BBQ sandwiches with all the trimmings, prepared and served by Troop One, (Faith Lutheran, West Columbia), followed by skits and a presentation by a local Flint Knapper (Andy Shull) who spoke to the boys about arrowheads and demonstrated his craft.

Reverend Bill Mitcham, who was the Synod Staff Representative and served as Retreat Chaplain in the 1980’s conducted the Sunday worship service and gave a very thought provoking sermon on the “Footprints of God”.
