Rev. Dr. Alfred Wayne Howell, Jr.

Reverend Dr. Alfred Wayne Howell, Jr., age 86, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at McLeod Health after a sudden illness.

Dr. Howell, son of Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Wayne Howell, Sr., was born in Canton, Georgia and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Theology from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, SC and a Doctorate in Theology from McCormick Theological Seminary.

He served as minister at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Johnston, SC from 1956 – 60. He was then called to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and served this congregation until his retirement after 34 years as their minister. He was named Pastor Emeritus in 2002 and at this time the Education Wing at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church was also named after him. Throughout his ministry he served on many boards and volunteered his time at many non-profits, such as Manna House and the Salvation Army.

Upon retirement, he enjoyed being very involved in his grandchildren’s lives, world travel, being a Ham radio operator, traveling to the beach, and photography. He served as a Chaplain for McLeod Health for over 20 years and recently earned recognition for 4500 volunteer hours of hospital service.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Dolores A. Howell, his daughters, Sharon Thompson (Rich Griffith), Allison DeLoache (Bill Deloache), his son Alfred Wayne Howell, III (Jan Howell), and a brother, Robert Howell (Joan Howell). As well as seven grandchildren, Leslie Thompson, Brittany Westbrook (Blake), Austin Thompson, Ali Gray DeLoache, Bailey DeLoache, Hannah Howell and Seth Howell. He is predeceased by his brother, Charles William Howell, and his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Wayne Howell, Sr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, February 4, 2017 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Shealy, the Rev. Wayne Kannaday, and the Bishop Herman Yoos officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service.
