An Invitation and Bishop’s Reflection on Attending Via de Cristo
Every now and then, I am asked about Via de Cristo. I attended a retreat in 1995 somewhat reluctantly, but my friend Wayne Young was persistent. And I am glad he was.
Three things stand out to me even now about that weekend. First, the emphasis on God’s gift of grace permeated everything. Second, there was a deep sense of being a part of an intentional, life-giving Christian community. Third, I had a clear sense of prayer undergirding the whole experience.
Some people who attend a weekend leave on a spiritual high that can lead them to expect similar highs out of their worship experience on Sunday morning which is not a healthy or realistic expectation. Most, however, leave with a renewed prayer life, a deeper commitment to Jesus Christ and the Church, and a desire to share God’s love with those outside the church.
The fall Via de Cristo weekend will be Thursday, September 19-22nd. The Spiritual Directors are Pastors Roy Butler, Brad Bellah and Patti Sue Burton-Pye. Feel free to talk with any of them about your interest or your questions. You can also email John Ballentine at email@example.com or go to scviadecristo.org for more information.
Finally I encourage you to pray about the possibility of attending this fall or next spring and sharing with me afterwards your experience.
