Worlds Apart But Companions!

What a blessing it was to welcome Pastor Naibu Nyambo as guest preacher this past January at St. David’s Lutheran Church, West Columbia, SC! Pastor Nyambo is the pastor of the Lutheran Church in Matamba, Tanzania, of the Southwest Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, and is St. David’s companion congregation. Nicknamed Pastor “Nemo,” his visit was unique and historic because it was the first time a pastor from a companion congregation in Tanzania has visited a sister church in the United States. Though the purpose of Pastor Nemo’s trip was to study at the Lutheran Southern Seminary in Columbia SC, he is grateful for the relationship that has developed between the churches of the two synods, so he came to St. David’s bearing gifts of thanks. In turn, the St. David’s We Care Team provided a quilt they made that is symbolic of their support of Lutheran World Relief.

Outside the Walls: The Yarn People

The “Yarn People”, a group of about a dozen women from Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, Chapin, who knit and crochet, raised $2160 for charity at a recent “Market at the Mount” event. Earlier this year, these women taught others to knit or crochet and sent several hundred wash cloths and dish cloths to South Carolina’s companion Synod-Southwest Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. They continued to meet on Wednesday’s at the Coffee Shelf, for refreshment, fellowship and yarn crafts. As their yarn work began to accumulate, they decided to sell it and divide the money between one local and one global mission outreach. They invited other crafters to join them in their “Market at the Mount” to raise money for this service project. Soon, they had numerous other yarn and fabric, paper, stone and wood crafts made by members of the congregation.
