West Virginia Flooding
In recent days, the State of West Virginia has been hit hard by flooding rains that dropped as much as one foot of water in one hour in places.The amount of rain that has fallen is very similar to the rain that fell here just eight months ago. 44 counties in West Virginia have had some damage. The bulk of the damage has happened in Roane, Kanawaha, and Greenbriar counties with more that 1200 homes and nearly 100 businesses either damaged or destroyed. 23 people are confirmed as dead and authorities expect that number to rise as clean up gets underway.
350 campers and staff from Camp Luther were evacuated to a shelter where they’ve been reunited with their families. Read more on the West Virginia – Western Maryland Synod website.
From the WV-WMD Synod Facebook page:
Volunteers can be accepted immediately. This is probably the fastest I have ever seen volunteer response welcomed (in an organized fashion) after any major incident. WV VOAD appears to be on top of it, and our SMO Director is on point.
STEPS TO VOLUNTEER:
- Update your tetnus shot if it has been more than 10 years;
- Send Sherri (at Community Lutheran Partners, Inc.) your email (firstname.lastname@example.org);
- Sign up through Volunteer WV https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/16Floods;
- and Log onto clp-online.org to download volunteer forms (found in volunteer link at the top of the page.)
We in the South Carolina Synod were blessed by the outpouring of support from around the country. This past weekend Synod Council voted to pay it forward by sending funds to aid the West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod in their recovery efforts.
