Mother Emanuel Nine Remembrance Day
On June 17, 2015, nine individuals were shot during a prayer service at Mother Emanuel AME Church. In the aftermath of this event, the SC General Assembly passed a Concurrent Resolution declaring June 17th as “Mother Emanuel Nine Day.”
As a result of this resolution, The South Carolina Human Affairs Commission with The Academy of Faith and Leadership at LTSS and Allen University will host “Mother Emanuel Nine Remembrance Day” on June 1, 2017 to reflect on the progress made in improving race relations and economic equality for minorities.
Allen University, an institution affiliated with the AME church, lost three alumni (Reverend Clementa Pinckney, Reverend Daniel Simmons, and Tywanza Sanders) from this massacre and will share brief supplications. The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary also bereaved by the loss of two of their esteemed alumni (Reverend Pinckney and Reverend Simmons) will offer prayers for peace.
