From Bishop Yoos – Hurricane Matthew
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we prepare for how we will respond to Hurricane Matthew, there are several things to keep in mind.
First, pray for all those whose lives and property have been or soon will be impacted by the winds, floods, and storm surge along the coast. Keep in mind especially those who are being evacuated from hospitals, nursing facilities, and retirement communities on the coast.
Second, consider a gift to the South Carolina Synod Disaster Fund which will be used for short term responses to those who are the hardest hit, and/or give to the ELCA Lutehran Disaster Response (see article below) which goes to the long-term recovery efforts which may take years.
At the Conference of Bishops this past week we prayed for the people of Haiti, Cuba, and all who would be affected by the storm using the prayer from the ELW page 76.
A prayer for a time of disaster
O God, where hearts are fearful and constricted, grant courage and hope. Where impossibilities close every door and window, grant imagination and resistance. Where distrust twists our thinking, grant healing and illumination. Where spirits are daunted and weakened, grant soaring wings and strengthened dreams. All these things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
