A Difficult Challenge
By Danny Garnett, Director, Palmetto Health Counseling
One of the most difficult challenges that faith communities and local congregations face is when someone in their church, whether an adult or a youth, commits suicide. This is a very difficult issue that both staff and church members are forced to face.
A few years ago Fe Anam Avis, while serving as pastor in a Presbyterian church, faced a very difficult time in his ministry when three youth in his congregation committed suicide within seven months of each other. As Fe and his congregation faced these crises, he became inspired to focus his ministry on helping pastors, youth ministers and congregations find ways to deal with this issue in churches. Fe created what is called Soul Shop. The staff of Soul Shop have presented these workshops to faith communities throughout the United States over the past few years.
On February 9, 2017, Palmetto Health Counseling and Saxe Gotha Presbyterian church in Columbia, SC, are offering two concurrent Soul Shop workshops in Columbia. One of these workshops is for church pastors and leaders. The other is for youth workers. Please, take a moment and review the two attached flyers for more information regarding these workshops on Ministering to Suicidal Desperations. Registration is now open.
